How to Make a Marketing Plan for Your Acting Career

Today I’m doing something I’ve never done before…

Giving you an inside look at my personal actor marketing plan.

I have a handy dandy spreadsheet where I keep track of all my marketing plans. And then I also have an Airtable calendar where I plan out my month-by-month strategies across all platforms.

  • Social Media Content

  • Online Networking

  • In Person Networking

  • Blog Content

  • Podcast Content

  • Events / Media Opportunities

  • Branding Maintenance

It’s important to note that I am not placing an equal amount of time and energy on every category. I just wouldn’t have time, right?

Every 6 months I identify my overall life goals and check in on progress from the previous 6 months. Part of this process is identifying my top 3 goals for marketing myself. Those goals are important because they act as my North Star to direct my strategy each month.

P.S. If you’re loving this article, you should join us in the A-List Monthly Membership program. I dive even deeper into these tips and providing additional pro-tips and examples from my own experience!

Actor Marketing Plan Checklist

Each month, I’m working on content for all platforms for the FOLLOWING month. This is part of my batch working process (which I teach in both The Social Media Script and Marketing for Creatives 101) and it helps me not only have the time to think through and be super strategic with my marketing, but also feel significantly less stressed, because I know I always have plenty of time to prepare.

Here’s an in-depth breakdown of the tasks and strategies I plan for in each of the primary marketing categories:

  • Social Media Content

    • Outline monthly strategy

    • Plot individual posts

    • Shoot days

    • Graphics days

    • Captions

    • Schedule

    • Engage!

  • Online Networking

    • Identify key targets

    • Select primary platforms

    • Select my daily and weekly quotas

  • In Person Networking

    • Group events in town

    • Group events in other places

    • 1-1 coffee dates or meetups

    • Classes or workshops

  • Blog Content

    • My blog content comes from podcast or social media posts

    • Strategize and select content to repurpose

    • Expand / write content

    • Schedule / post

  • Podcast Content

    • Brainstorming episodes

    • Outlining

    • Reaching out to guests

    • Recording

    • Editing

    • Scheduling

  • Media and PR Opportunities

    • Pitching for publicity opportunities using my press kit such as podcasts, blogs, live events, guest speaking opportunities, articles, interviews, etc.

  • Branding Maintenance

    • Photo Shoots

    • Press Kit updates

    • Updating information on my website

    • Updating new media on websites

Whew - that’s a lot, I know. If you feel overwhelmed after hearing that please do not panic -- like I said, I’m never doing all of those things at once. AND these tasks are a lot less daunting than they might seem once you know the right strategy with which to tackle them - you can sign up for Marketing for Creatives 101 OR The Social Media Script for a step-by-step guide for how I do it (without losing my mind or it taking up all my time haha).

I want to leave you with a few key reminders about marketing for actors that I hope will encourage you as you undertake this journey!

  1. Marketing creates more opportunities for you.

  2. Creating your marketing plan around specific, measurable goals is key.

  3. Planning ahead is everything.

  4. Batch working and repurposing content makes life less stressful and your marketing go farther.

  5. It’s okay to take breaks or scale back when needed. We’re not machines.
