3 things you must know to be successful as an atlanta actor

Hey actors, is Georgia on your mind lately?

In 2008, Georgia passed one of the most enticing and attractive tax subsidies to lure Hollywood productions. In the last decade it has proven to be a huge success. Georgia is now the number one feature film destination in the world and constantly ranks in the top three for overall production, and gets closer to LA and NY every year.

Combine that with the industry embracing self-tapes out of necessity as a result of Covid-19, and Atlanta seems to be busier than ever, and even more attractive as a place to work for actors...

Whether you're already IN the Atlanta market or considering making the move, here are 3 Things You Need to Know to Thrive as an Actor in Atlanta:

  1. Be Here, Train Here
Sure, you can self-tape from anywhere now but casting directors are being even more diligent on ensuring that actors are truly local. Episodic television moves incredibly fast and CDs don't want to get caught scrambling to replace an actor who can't report to set on short notice.

If you're an actor considering a move and are seeking representation in Atlanta, it's critical to train with studios hereStudios and teachers know the current industry trends, they know what agents are looking for, and often know the preference of particular CDs. With so many options available over zoom, it's a smart investment now before you even make a move.

  2. Upgrade Your Materials
Speaking of seeking reps, there are 28 franchised agencies in Atlanta, and they are getting several hundred to a few thousand submissions each month. Atlanta is being bombarded by actors who are physically here seeking reps and those who want to get reps here.

If that's you, you'd better make sure your actor package is in tip top condition. If you haven't had a second set of eyes evaluate your tools, you're missing an opportunity to make the best first impression, and your submission may not stand out in the right way.

  3. Self-produce: Create Your Own Content
It's easier than ever, it's cheaper than ever, and you can create content that casts you in the best light.

There are several new union contracts, including the Micro Budget, Short Project Agreement, and updated New Media Agreement, all of which make it easier to shoot union, without breaking the bank, and with less paperwork than ever before. Some contracts have eligibility benefits, while others may offer a pathway to membership. Educate yourself on the nuances and start self-producing!
